How to calculate a tip
Enter your total bill amount in the large input field at the top. Select your currency from the dropdown. Then choose a tip percentage from the preset buttons or type a custom amount. Use the plus and minus buttons to set how many people are splitting the bill. The calculator instantly shows your tip amount, tip per person, and the total per person including food and tip.
The calculation is: tip amount = bill amount multiplied by tip percentage divided by 100. Total per person = (bill plus tip) divided by number of people.
How much should you tip?
United States: Tipping is deeply embedded in US service culture. 15% is considered the minimum for acceptable service, 18 to 20% is standard for good service, and 25% or more is for exceptional service.
United Kingdom: 10 to 12.5% is standard at sit-down restaurants. Many UK restaurants add a discretionary service charge — check your bill before tipping additionally.
Australia and New Zealand: Tipping is not culturally expected, where minimum wage laws mean hospitality workers earn a liveable wage without tips. However, 10% is appreciated for excellent service in city restaurants.
Europe: Tipping practices vary by country. In Germany, rounding up the bill is common. France includes a service charge by law. Scandinavia rarely expects tips.
What tip percentage should I leave?
In the US, 15 to 20% is standard for sit-down restaurants. In the UK, 10 to 12.5% is typical. In Australia and New Zealand, tipping is not expected but 10% is appreciated for excellent service.
How is the tip calculated?
Tip amount = Bill multiplied by (Tip% divided by 100). Total per person = (Bill plus Tip) divided by number of people. All values are rounded to 2 decimal places.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
In the US, both approaches are acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct as the tip is for service. In practice the difference is small and tipping on the total is more common.
Can I split unevenly?
This calculator assumes an even split. For uneven splits, calculate the total per person and adjust individual contributions manually based on what each person ordered.
Which currencies are supported?
USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, NZD, and CAD. Select your currency from the dropdown next to the bill amount field.
