Free online timer — countdown and stopwatch

This free online timer works as both a countdown timer and a stopwatch. Switch between modes using the tabs at the top. The countdown timer lets you set any duration up to 99 hours, while the stopwatch tracks elapsed time to the hundredth of a second with full lap support. The timer continues running accurately in the background even when you switch to another browser tab.

How to use the countdown timer

Enter the hours, minutes, and seconds you want to count down from, or click one of the preset buttons for common durations. Click Start to begin. The timer displays a circular progress ring that shrinks as time runs down, and the numbers turn orange in the last 30 seconds and red in the last 10 seconds to give you a visual warning. When the timer reaches zero, a sound plays and a notification appears at the top of the screen.

How to use the stopwatch

Switch to Stopwatch mode using the tab at the top. Click Start to begin timing. Use the Lap button to record split times — each lap shows both the individual lap time and the cumulative elapsed time. Click Pause to stop the clock temporarily, then Resume to continue. Click Reset to clear everything and return to zero.

Common uses

Pomodoro technique: The 25-minute preset is ideal for Pomodoro productivity sessions. Work for 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break using the 5 min preset, then repeat. The Pomodoro technique is widely used to improve focus, reduce mental fatigue, and increase output over long work sessions.

Cooking: Set a timer for pasta, eggs, baking, or any recipe that needs precise timing. The sound alert means you do not need to watch the screen.

Exercise and fitness: Use the stopwatch for run timing, interval training, or tracking rest periods between sets. The lap feature is useful for recording splits in running or swimming.

Classroom activities: Teachers use countdown timers for timed tests, presentations, and group activities. A visible timer on a projected screen helps students manage their remaining time.

Presentations: Keep your talk on schedule with a countdown timer. Practising with a timer develops natural pacing and reduces the risk of running over time.

Can I use this as a Pomodoro timer?

Yes — click the 25 min preset for a standard Pomodoro work session. When it ends, take a 5-minute break using the 5 min preset, then start another 25-minute session. After four Pomodoros, take a longer 15 to 30 minute break.

Does it work if I switch tabs?

Yes. The timer runs in the background and will still alert you when it finishes even if you have switched to another tab or minimised your browser.

Is there a maximum time I can set?

You can set up to 99 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds — more than enough for any practical use case.

Can I turn off the sound alert?

Yes — use the sound toggle below the controls to switch sound alerts on or off.

How accurate is the stopwatch?

The stopwatch displays to the hundredth of a second and uses high-resolution browser timing. It is accurate enough for fitness tracking and general timekeeping.
